Mr. Tuna’s Life Lessons: Why Gratitude Lasts Longer Than Love

The weight of a quiet gesture

At some point, I found my hands coming together in a quiet, habitual fold.

There was no grand catalyst. This humble gesture simply found its place within my daily rhythm.

In the moments I become aware of this posture, I find myself wanting to offer a soft word of encouragement to my own soul.

“You have lived well,” I whisper.

Though I cannot pinpoint the exact reason, a strange sense of fulfillment washes over me.

Perhaps it is because I recognize the message of deep respect for another’s existence embedded in that movement.

It does not require conscious meaning to be beautiful.

The body moves before the word is spoken; the heart responds before the mind can rationalize it.

Whenever I face a guest, or whenever I face myself, I bring my hands together.

And naturally, a single phrase follows.

“Thank you.”

This is my hometown. It is effortless, isn't it? I have come to understand the true weight of being natural.

More than a greeting, a resonance

In the past, it was merely a greeting.

The words that automatically surface when a guest pays their bill or when etiquette calls for a polite closing.

It was familiar, perhaps even a reflex.

But at some point, those words began to sound different.

I started to realize that the texture of the voice matters more than the word itself.

One day, a guest who had finished their meal in quiet contemplation met my eyes. They whispered a very small “Thank you” before departing.

It was short and soft, yet that single phrase seeped deep into my heart.

It was a moment where one soul truly touched another.

They say being natural means becoming as you are. I hope my heart can follow that same path.

Recognizing the noble presence

Gratitude is not merely an acknowledgment of something received.

It is a recognition of the very fact that a person exists in that space with you.

The roots of the word "thank you" suggest a meeting of something high.

It means I recognize the noble and precious element within you,

and I welcome it with an open heart.

If so, then gratitude is less about manners and more about a posture toward life.

While it is difficult to express the full depth of the heart, a simple "thank you" serves as a quiet, dignified vessel for that feeling.

Lessons from the mundane

Gratitude is not an emotion reserved for extraordinary days.

Rather, it arrives softly during the most ordinary moments.

One day, a staff member said to me,

“The guests looked truly happy today.”

I had been exhausted, but that one sentence washed away the accumulated fatigue.

It was a short remark, but it felt like a warm breath of comfort.

On another occasion, my wife told me,

“You have become much gentler lately.”

In her words, I could feel my own transformation taking root.

To have such a change noticed by the person closest to me—I realized then how much there is to be thankful for.

Gratitude as a way of remembering

Gratitude is a method of memory.

It is the power to choose what to hold onto and what to let go.

Even within the same day, the conclusion changes depending on whose words you carry with you.

There are days when a brief, warm greeting lingers longer than any unpleasant encounter.

When these memories accumulate, a person becomes a little softer.

And eventually…

That softness makes life more tender.

A phrase that restores the self

Lately, I find myself saying “Thank you” more often.

Though addressed to others, it is actually a word I offer to myself.

Within those words lie silent confessions:

“I am accepting this moment,”

“I am respecting this connection,”

“I want to remember this day.”

To be thankful is not an act of lowering oneself, but an act of restoration.

Sometimes I mutter it silently, letting the word rebuild me from within.

The anchor of lasting affection

In our Bangi kitchen, a young couple works side by side.

When they occasionally clash or have a difficult day, I pull them aside and speak quietly.

“Just try saying thank you to each other.”

We often speak of "love" as the deepest emotion, but as we navigate life, we find there is a feeling that sustains us longer.

That feeling is gratitude.

“Thank you for being here.”

“I endured because of you.”

“I didn't say much, but I was truly thankful for you.”

Gratitude embraces love and supports the heart when passion wavers.

Love may falter, but gratitude is an emotion that lingers.

If love is the blooming flower, gratitude is the roots that keep it standing.

We offer freesias, the scent of spring, to all guests visiting our Bangi and Sinsa branches.
