What Do Non-Drinkers Do at Night? The Shift in Evening Culture

When talking with those who don't usually enjoy drinking, the following question often comes up.

“Then, how do you spend your evenings without alcohol?”

For a long time, we have naturally associated our post-work daily life or meetings with acquaintances with drinking. However, just because alcohol is excluded doesn't mean the evening itself disappears. We need to look at what fills our evenings instead of alcohol.

Changes in Domestic Drinking Rates and New Evening Landscapes

According to the “2025 Community Health Survey” data released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) in July 2026, the monthly drinking rate for adults in Korea was 57.1%. This means that more than half of the adult population still drinks at least once a month.

What is noteworthy is the change occurring mainly among the younger generation. The monthly drinking rate for men in their 20s fell from 76.9% in 2016 to 66.1% in 2025, and for women in their 20s, it also decreased from 64.6% to 58.6% during the same period. In the case of men, a downward trend in drinking rates was confirmed across all age groups.

These indicators suggest that rather than alcohol itself disappearing, the way it is consumed and the social attitude toward it are changing.

Everyday Records of Post-Work Life Without Alcohol

Recently, an interesting question asking about the evening routines of non-drinkers was posted on an online community.

What do people who don't drink or have quit drinking do after work?

The author shared their concerns about the habit of drinking wine after work becoming a fixed routine to relieve stress or boredom. The responses were filled with surprisingly ordinary and everyday activities.

Many people enjoyed walking, reading, cooking, or simply taking a rest. Dining with friends, watching movies, or spending leisure time drinking tea were also major answers. It shows that rather than the pressure to do something productive just because one isn't drinking, spending the evening at one's own pace is what matters.

A Turning Point for Recovery: The Meaning of a ‘Signal’ Rather Than Alcohol

A glass of alcohol after work sometimes performs a function beyond simple consumption. Drinking after putting away work equipment and changing clothes acts as a ‘boundary’ that separates public time from private time. What we wanted might have been a reward for ourselves for working hard today or permission to rest, rather than the alcohol itself.

In organizational psychology, this is defined as ‘Psychological Detachment.’ The key to true recovery is breaking away from the extension of work and experiencing complete rest and a sense of self-control. Therefore, an evening with less alcohol doesn't necessarily need to be filled with self-development. Resting well is also an important process in completing the day.

The Value of Time Focusing on the Essence

What is more important than what you do in the evening is who you are with and with what heart you share that time. In the place where alcohol is emptied, relationships with people, carefully prepared food, and sincere conversations that were previously obscured become more vivid.
